ENGR5004 Statics session 4 worked example (slide 13) official answers

A rectangular block of material with shear modulus G=620G = 620 MPa is bonded to two rigid horizontal plates. The block is 50 mm high, 200 mm long (in the direction of the load) and 62 mm wide. The lower plate is fixed and the upper plate is subjected to a horizontal force PP along the 200 mm length, under which the upper plate moves by 1 mm.

Determine:

Block 50 mm high, 200 mm long and 62 mm wide bonded between a fixed lower plate and an upper plate pulled horizontally by P along the 200 mm direction.
Block 50 mm high, 200 mm long and 62 mm wide bonded between a fixed lower plate and an upper plate pulled horizontally by P along the 200 mm direction.

    the average shearing strain in the block;
  2. (b)
    the force PP exerted on the upper plate.
